Unless you’ve somehow been hiding under a rock the past few months, it’s likely that you’ve heard of the international cultural sensation that is Marie Kondo. Known for her de-cluttering techniques, Japanese author Marie Kando first published the bestselling book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing.” in 2014 but it was with the 2018 release of her Netflix show “Tidying up with Marie Kondo” that she became a household name.
How to organise your home using the KonMari Method™
The KonMari Method™ centres on organising your home in a specific order, based on five categories, and getting rid of any items that do not “spark joy”, as she refers to it. The five groups are clothing, books, paper documents, miscellaneous, and sentimental items. One would, therefore, organise clothing first, before moving on to books, papers, miscellaneous items and then sentimental pieces.
The method is centred on an attitude of mindful consumption and introspection, embodying a holistic philosophy. Marie Kondo’s technique involves tackling each category by moving the items from where they are kept, and separating things that “spark joy” and will, therefore, be kept, and those that will be discarded.
To organise your home with this method, first familiarise yourself with Marie’s six basic rules of tidying:
- Commit yourself to tidying up
- Imagine your ideal lifestyle
- Finish discarding first, before thinking about storage.
- Tidy by category, not by location.
- Follow the right order
- Ask yourself if it sparks joy.
Once you’re comfortable with these rules, start with the first category, clothing. Organise all your clothing in one area and take time to hold and regard each piece, deciding whether it sparks joy for you. If it does, put it aside to be folded and packed neatly, and if not, mentally thank it for its service and put it away for donation or throw it away. Once you’re done with clothing, move onto the next category, continuing with this method until your home is clutter-free!
This technique may sound rather time consuming, but the results speak for themselves- a refreshed, clutter-free home!
