Live Large in a Small Living Room

You don’t need to live in a mansion to have light, airy living spaces. With the right furniture and décor, you can have all the advantages of smaller living without compromising on that sense of spaciousness.

Use the following tricks and techniques to make your living room seem larger.

The first rule is to stick to quality – in a smaller living area, you are constantly surrounded by your furniture and décor and therefor it needs to be durable and long-lasting.

In the living room, you need to focus on strong, clean lines. You almost need to “undercrowd” the space, so choose individual pieces that are colour-coordinated to create negative space without looking cluttered.

Look for furniture that are see-through, like glass-top tables or a backless bookshelf; you should also consider blinds instead of heavy curtains. Ensure that the furniture is arranged in such a way that traffic naturally flows through the room and that you have ample floor space.

While two separate chairs, e.g. wingback chairs, will create the negative space to add to the illusion of space, few people can resist a comfy sofa. If this is you, choose one that is made of a durable fabric and can double as an additional sleeper. Opt for neutral, natural colours – you can always add colour with accent pieces such as pillows of vases.

Wooden or other natural floors can make a room look bigger, but it might get a bit cold. If you feel that you need a bit of warmth, choose a round carpet instead of a square one. The lines add flow to the room, which in turns adds the illusion of space.

When it comes to lighting, you should look at elongated lamp shades or hanging lights. You want to lead the eye upwards – the illusion of a higher ceiling adds space. It is also a way of adding a personal touch to a room that is predominantly neutral in colour. You don’t necessarily need to have brightly coloured lights or light covers though – instead, think texture and shapes.

A small living room need not cramp your style – if you choose your furniture and décor wisely, you can create the illusion of space, creating spaciousness and a sense of airiness.
