The Grandest House in Ghana

When it comes to grandiose architecture in Ghana nothing quite comes close to the Flagstaff House. This house, also known as the Golden Jubilee House, is the presidential palace of Ghana, which serves as a residence and office of the President of Ghana.

This architectural masterpiece has made its way onto a number of lists as one of the most beautiful presidential palaces and it’s not hard to see why. The Flagstaff House was ranked as one of the top 10 most beautiful presidential palaces last year according to theestle.net and it made the top 10 list for Africa this year by africaranking.com.

The Flagstaff House was reconstructed and inaugurated in November 2008 by the government of John Agyekum Kufour. It was built by an Indian contractor using Ghanaian sub-contractors at an original cost of $30 million financed by a loan from the Indian government. The final cost has not yet been confirmed, but according to reports from the BBC’s David Amanpor it is rumoured to be as much as $45-50 million.

The house was unveiled weeks before the presidential elections in 2008 to much criticism. According to the Architects Registration Council of Ghana the unique architecture is said to be based on the sacred Ashanti Golden Stool. The stool is a sacred symbol of the Ashanti nation believed to house the soul of the people.

Ghana is home to a number of architectural wonders but many believe that nothing quite comes close to the presidential palace. If you’re in or around Accra be sure to drive past and take in its beauty.

At Mobus we believe in architecture, that although modern, features some classic characteristics that will allow our developments to stand the test of time.
