Go Green: How to Save Water and Make Your Apartment More Eco-Friendly Part 1

In the spirit of the Climate Change and Green Economy Learning Strategy launched at the end of October 2016 to promote climate change education, awareness and learning in Ghana, we have put together a list of ways in which you can save water in your apartment and make it more eco-friendly.

While more than 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water, we live in a time where we are running out of fresh water resources.

Saving water is easy and as a bonus, you’ll also save money as your utilities bill will be lower! Another good reason to start saving water today!

Water torture

A dripping tap is not only hugely annoying, it is also a huge waste of water. In fact, a dripping tap can waste as much as 15 litres of water a day! Fixing a leaky tap is usually quite easy and involves replacing a washer or two. The amount of water you save is worth the effort, so fix that dripping tap today to increase the eco-friendliness of your apartment.

Save in the shower

While showers are considered to use less water than running a bath, you can save even more water by taking shorter showers. Furthermore, by turning off the tap while shampooing your hair, soaping your body or shaving and then turning the taps on again to rinse is an additional way of saving water and being more eco-friendly.

Low-flow faucets

Install low-flow faucets or aerators in your shower head. This allows you to use less water while still maintaining the same water pressure. You’ll save almost 80% of the water you usually use while showering, which can be up to 300 litres of water. Saving so much water is a huge step towards making your apartment more eco-friendly.

Use grey water

Place a bucket in the shower to catch water that would otherwise be lost – this water often has very little cleaning material residue and can be used to water houseplants or the outside garden. The same goes for water used to rinse the dishes – of course using eco-friendly shampoos, body washes and detergents will make the water safer for use on plants.

By saving water, you make your apartment more eco-friendly. Not only are you doing the environment a favour, you also do yourself a favour by saving money. Living an eco-friendly life is beneficial to us all!
