Go Green: How to Save Electricity and Make Your Apartment More Eco-Friendly Part 2

Ghana launched the Climate Change and Green Economy Learning Strategy at the end of October 2016 to promote climate change education, awareness and learning in the country.

In the spirit of this move towards more eco-friendly living, here are some more ways to save electricity and make your apartment more eco-friendly.

Lighten up

Switch to energy-saving light bulbs, available from most supermarkets and utility stores. This makes a huge and immediate difference to your electricity usage as these light bulbs use far less electricity than normal incandescent light bulbs. Energy-saving light bulbs mimic the soft light of incandescent light bulbs so you’ll never notice the difference – until you get a much lower electricity bill at the end of the month! Not only are you saving money, you are also saving electricity and making your home more eco-friendly.

Décor does it

Ever hear of albedo? This is the phenomenon where dark colours absorb light and light colours reflect light. Ad you can use this simple trick to change the temperatures of the different rooms in your apartment. To keep a room cool, use bright and light colours that will reflect heat coming through the windows and keep the temperature in the room low. If you want the room the be warm and cosy, change the décor to darker and warmer colours that will absorb heat from the sunlight streaming in. This is an easy yet efficient trick to save electricity that would have been used by air-conditioning.

Power (s)trip

As long as appliances are plugged in at the wall socket, they keep drawing electricity – even if the appliance isn’t switched on. You need to switch the power off at the wall socket, which can be quite the exercise if you have a lot of appliances plugged in. Using a power strip can save you lot of energy – both physical and electrical. Simply plug your appliances, whether the TV, microwave or phone charger, into a power strip and then disconnect the power being used by all of these by flipping one switch. This will reduce electricity use and turn your apartment into a more eco-friendly zone.

By reducing the amount of electricity you use, you can make your apartment eco-friendly while at the same time saving yourself a lot of money and making your apartment more energy-efficient.
