Time flies, and before you know it, that gorgeous living room you spent thousands on suddenly looks dated. Devastated, you look at the current trends online and in home magazines, only to realise that you are not willing to spend that much money on redesigning your home, and why should you?
Luckily, there is a solution: style your home to be timelessly chic but still stay up-to-date with trends.
Start with the basics. The key to achieving a stylish home is to have the right basics: it’s like building a house or putting on make-up — the foundation makes the whole thing work. To do this, make sure that your furniture, flooring, and wall colours have the right base.
A Neutral Couch
Preferably ranging anywhere between a creamy beige to a light grey, a neutral-coloured couch is a must. Most of your decor elements can change with the seasons, but your couch should be constant.
The Romans loved it, Bernini loved it, Michelangelo loved it, and we love it, too. Marble is a timeless classic; use it for floors, bathroom or kitchen counters, coffee tables, or even just a few tiles in your wall for a luxurious accent. And if you don’t feel like spending a fortune on real marble, there are plenty of alternatives on the market — even scatter cushions! If marble isn’t your thing, you can opt for granite.
Whether it is hardwood or parquet, wooden floors look classy. But don’t fret if you don’t want to invest in a wooden floor — with plenty of alternatives, even linoleum with a wooden look can work!
Walls painted in neutral, soft hues (once again, think cream, beige, light greys) are an easy base to work with. If you choose to have wall-to-wall carpets, make sure you pick a neutral colour as well.
Your Personal Touch
Yes, living in a hotel is fun, but you want your home to feel like yours. To do this, make sure that whatever furniture pieces you choose fit in with your personal taste. If you have a preference for a specific item or fabric that you have always loved (my grandmother loved the handwoven goat hair cushions and runners she made), use that as your key signature. Remember, it’s your house, you should love it.
These are the basics. In our next blog post, we will explain how you can use these basics and add a few pieces to stay on-trend with whatever current style trend you wish to follow!
