Fashion forward! Accra, Ghana, has been ranked as the 62nd most fashionable city in the world by the Global Language Monitor.
Rankings are based on the Brand Affiliation Index (BAI), which is used to create a longitudinal study that considers three years of data before compiling the list. The study is a Big Data textual analysis which considers billions of web pages, millions of blogs, global print, electronic media and social media formats. The report ranks Global Fashion Capitals that qualify by surpassing a number of thresholds in 5 fashion categories, namely: Ready-to-wear, Moda, Haute Couture, Pret-a-Porter and Fashion.
Ghana’s capital joins other African countries on the list, including Cape Town, South Africa staying steady at number 39, Johannesburg, South Africa at number 44 while Lagos, Nigeria rose up to 54 and Dakar, Senegal fell to number 59. The Global Language monitor had the following to say about the rankings, “the current rankings now include 63 fashion capitals. There are three new fashion capitals from West Africa: Accra, Ghana; Dakar, Senegal; and Lagos, Nigeria. There is one new fashion capital from East Asia: Kuala Lumpur.” This is the first time that a Ghanaian city has been featured in the top 63 countries.
Accra street style is famed for bright colours, patterned printed material, chic head wraps and casual footwear.
The Global Language Monitor (GLM) was founded in Silicon Valley In 2003 and is currently based in Austin, Texas. GLM has been compiling public lists of the 63 most fashionable cities since 2007. GLM also provides algorithm-based products and services, which are used all over the world. Customers include the Fortune 500, the Higher education market and the high technology firms.
