9 Interior Design Rules to Live by – Part 2

Whether your furnishing your first apartment or upgrading to the home of your dreams there are a few simple interior design tricks that will help you make the most of your new space and the best part is that you don’t have to be super design savvy to get them right.

In this three-part post we’ll unpack nine interior design rules every new homeowner should live by.

Bring in nature

You should incorporate plants into the design of your space from the start of your interior design project and not as an afterthought. Plants add a freshness to your home that pulls all the interior design elements together. If you’re nervous about plant care, there are a range of for easy-care house plants that will have you feeling greener than ever.

Use layering

Playing with textures and layering is a great way to add some depth and warmth to your home. Try layering a rug over your main carpet, or cushions on your seating area or bed. Throw a blanket over the side of chair and layer your windows with curtains. By using the layering technique, you can take your home from bland and boring to beautiful in no time.

Play with lighting

The layering technique is not only for scatter cushions and carpets; you can layer your lighting as well. Rooms with one type of lighting can feel two dimensional so try mixing it up and ensure that you have lighting coming from multiple source not only overhead. Try incorporating floor lamps, wall sconces or even desk lamps in an empty corner.
