4 Popular Options for Outdoor Surfaces

Today’s homeowners are spoilt for choice with an increasing variety of flooring options. Here are some great selections to consider for your outdoor flooring.

  1. Concrete

Concrete has become a trendy and popular choice in the past years. Concrete can last a lifetime, and it is probably one of the easiest materials to maintain and clean if you are not a fan of porcelain and ceramic tiles.

Concrete surfaces can be used both indoors and outdoors. Plus, there are different colours available to brighten any room or patio.

For your exterior space though, go for concrete tiles, which are thicker and specifically manufactured for outdoor purposes.

  1. Porcelain and Ceramic Tiles

Porcelain and ceramic tiles are a low maintenance option, but that doesn’t mean they lose their aesthetic appeal.

Budget-wise, porcelain and ceramic tiles come at a fraction of the costs of real wood and stone. The latest tile styles have evolved to include the rustic look of hardwood, beautiful stone and wood lookalikes, and fantastic patterns and colours.

Porcelain tiles can withstand moisture, making them an ideal choice for outdoor spaces. Choose a rougher tile texture and avoid slippery tiles if the surface that needs to be covered is situated near a body of water, pool or jacuzzi.

  1. Wood Decking

Decks are still in fashion thanks to their rustic look, especially with so many varieties of reclaimed and recycled materials that contribute to a sustainable environment.

The two main options are wood and composite wood, the latter a composite of recycled plastics, bamboo fibres, and wood chips. Make sure the wood is water and rot resistant.

Choose quality finishes as these can last for more than a decade. Although decking needs low maintenance, bear in mind that wooden decks need to be treated and resealed every few years.

  1. Natural Stone

Natural materials like slate or limestone are classic choices for outdoors and gardens. Stone looks beautiful on a large flooring surface, as a pathway, or a wrap-around the swimming pool area or garden feature.

Great stone options include the classic textured terracotta, and the more luxurious marble and granite.

With natural stone, remember to invest in a matte or non-slip sealer or finish, as it tends to get slippery when wet.
