The first part of our post looked at some of the basic things you can do to make sure you have enough space to host your next special event in your new apartment. In Part 2, we look at some additional tips and tricks that will ensure your guests never even notice the limited space in your new abode.
Be strategic about your menu
Make sure your menu features foods that won’t require extensive cooking on the night to avoid a kitchen space disaster. Get as much cooking done beforehand and distract your guests with tricks like a cold salad or an appetiser that requires jut a small amount of time in the oven before you serve them.
Don’t put everything in one place
You don’t want your guests stacking up in one area to get to everything, so separate your courses and manage the traffic by placing drinks and snacks on a server in the living room, your main meal on the dining room and dessert in the kitchen.
Create an ambience
Use lighting to set the mood for your event. Lighting can help enhance certain areas in the home and create the illusion of more space, so getting it right is an important part of hosting your event. Your best bet would be to create a welcoming glow in your home with soft lighting such as lamps, candles and fairly lights. If you can, avoid harsh overhead lighting.
Your new apartment may not come complete with all the bells and whistles, so this is a good time to flex your creative muscle and repurpose certain items in your home. For example, you can free up some space in your fridge by using your sink as a drinks-cooling station by filling it up with ice.
You live in a small apartment, which probably retains heat. While this is great in winter, it could create claustrophobia in the warm summer months. To combat this cabin fever, make sure you finish all the cooking before guests arrive, and open up those windows and doors to keep air circulating.
